And I’m pretty sure they’re from Swedish Saebmie as the children in this picture are the two Saami children that landed on Ellis Island in 1906.
And the colour of the stielie-tjohpe the boy’s wearing shows that he’s still ‘just a kid’ and not technically considered either a boy or woman yet. Until boys become a certain age, they’re usually given red gaptah and yellow, white or red tjohpeh, just like girls, whereas the black and dark blue gaptah are worn by adults, even though women often continue to wear red gaptah as well.
Obviously fashion and traditions change, it might have been different back then, but that’s the general rule nowadays anyway.
